![]() Today, the only reminder of the once-thriving brewery is a small plaque on the side of a building on South Main Street. In the end, however, the brewery was closed and all of its equipment was moved to Rochester. This decision was met with great resistance from the people of Hornell, and a number of protests were held. The new owners decided to close the Hornell brewery and move all operations to Rochester. ![]() In 1919, the Hornell Brewing Company was purchased by the Rochester Brewing Company. By the early 1900s, the Hornell Brewing Company was one of the largest employers in the city, with over 100 workers on its payroll. A new, larger brewery was built on South Main Street in 1884, and the company began bottling its beer in 1886. In the years that followed, the brewery continued to grow and expand. The brewery operated out of a small brick building on Broadway, and its first beer was called “Hornell Lager.” The brewery quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality beer, and in 1874, it won a gold medal at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. In 1868, the Hornell Brewing Company was founded by John B. ![]() In the years that followed, a number of other breweries opened their doors in Hornell, including the Seneca Street Brewery, the New York Brewery, and the Excelsior Brewery. ![]() Baggott opened a small brewery on Seneca Street. The first recorded instance of brewing in the city was in 1810, when John F. No one knows for sure when the first batch of beer was brewed in Hornell, but the city has a long and storied history with the craft. ![]()
